Janet Dixon - Art
When Janet’s four children were small she had little time to devote to art. She entertained them with cartoon and animal drawings. In 1990, when her children were a little older, she began experimenting with watercolors. She took a brief introductory course at the Center for Creative Arts in Yorklyn, DE and has been painting nearly every day since.
For the most part Janet is self-taught. She has studied with leading artists such as Judi Betts and Charles Reid. She has taken oil and watercolor workshops throughout her career.
Janet loves the freedom and challenge of watercolor and the process of discovery that takes place when the paint itself takes on a life of its own. This creative process is a natural outgrowth of her faith which gives her the inspiration and direction to accomplish the beauty found in her work. She began working in oils after moving to North Carolina and joining a plein air group. Oils gave her another dimension to the freedom of capturing the fleeting light.
Janet has exhibited in numerous art shows in the Delaware, Pennsylvania and North Carolina areas. She has been commissioned by local and out-of-state collectors and her work is part of many corporate and private collections. Janet was selected as the poster print artist for the Wilmington [Delaware] Flower Market in 1993. Her work has been in shows at the Franklin Mint in Media, PA and the American College in Philadelphia. She was juried into the Rittenhouse Square Art Show in Philadelphia, PA. She was selected out of 11,000 artists across the United States as a finalist in “The Artist” Magazine’s 1997 art competition and one of ten finalists in the "International Artist" magazines's 2002 art competition. She has been selected to exhibit in the Annual Juried exhibition of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina for 5 consecutive years earning her signature membership. In 2005, she was published in the book, How Did you Paint That? 100 ways to paint People & Figures-Volume 2. She has won “Best in Show” and “First Place" awards, Merit and Purchase Awards in various exhibitions. She has taught private art lessons out of her studio and classes in various arts councils and workshops since 1993.
Janet is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina. Janet lived for thirteen years in Delaware. She returned to North Carolina in 1998. She currently lives in New Bern, NC.
